Letter from Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines President & CEO:
Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines announced that we have reached an agreement to combine, creating an even stronger airline. We want you to hear directly from us about what that means for Hawai‘i and how we intend to sustain a deep commitment to the people of this unique and important place.
As the two airlines rooted in the 49th and 50th states, both of which are uniquely reliant upon air travel, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines share a great deal in common. We are proud of our incredible
people, who take care of our guests, each other, and our communities every day. We are aligned in the way we do business, the way in which we treat our employees, and our engagement and support for the communities we serve. This will continue now and into the future.
Together, we can build on our respective 90+ year legacies, do more for Hawai‘i travelers and our
employees, and create a stronger platform on which to compete and sustain for the future. As we move forward on this journey, we share a commitment to preserve and uphold Hawaiian Airlines’ unique place in the business and culture of Hawai‘i, to provide critical passenger and cargo service, to remain a major employer of local people, and to share Hawai‘i’s culture and values with other parts of the world.
Our plans include:
Preserving the Hawaiian Airlines brand: The Hawaiian Airlines brand will remain, including on airplanes, at airports and elsewhere. It will exist alongside the Alaska Airlines brand, supported by a single operating platform and industry-leading loyalty program.
Expanding service for Hawai‘i: We will maintain robust Neighbor Island service, which we know
provides a critical link for families and businesses, and will increase cargo capacity. We understand
Hawaiian Airlines’ responsibility to Hawai‘i residents – Alaska Airlines also provides essential air service
to 19 communities in the state of Alaska, only three of which are accessible by roads. This combination
will also expand service and convenience for Hawai‘i residents, with three times as many destinations
throughout North America that can be reached nonstop or one-stop and greater access to global
destinations.
Growing union-represented jobs: We will maintain and grow union-represented jobs in Hawai‘i,
including preserving pilot, flight attendant, and maintenance bases in Honolulu and airport operations
and cargo throughout the state with greater opportunity for career advancement, expanded access to
workforce development programs, and competitive pay and benefits.
Strengthening operational presence: We will maintain strong local operations with local leadership and a regional headquarters in Hawai‘i to support the combined airlines’ network.
Investing in local communities: We will combine and expand the two airlines’ commitments, working
with local communities and government officials to help enable a vibrant future for Hawai‘i. This
includes continued promotion of responsible and regenerative tourism in the Hawaiian Islands and
investing in the preservation of Hawaiian language and culture.
Stewarding the environment into the future: We will combine our environmental sustainability
initiatives, including aligning around Alaska Airlines’ goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and
adopting Hawaiian Airlines’ commitment to local sourcing.
Alaska Airlines has been proud to serve Hawai‘i for over sixteen years. At the same time, we know we
have more to learn and feel a great responsibility to serve the people of Hawai‘i for generations to
come.
We both believe deeply in the opportunity ahead for this combined airline. We also acknowledge that
this news will be met with a range of emotions. In the months ahead, we look forward to hosting
community conversations across the state, learning from your perspectives, and working to find the best way forward together.
We have provided additional information on a new joint website
