Join Hawai'i Keiki Museum and Maunakea Observatories for a day to honor local hero Ellison Onizuka. Booths from
UH Institute of Astronomy,
Thirty Meter Telescope, Subaru Observatory,
Hawai'i Community College, Palamanui, MK Visitor Information Station, Project Panoptes and more to learn about space exploration.
Ellison Shoji Onizuka was the first Asian American and the first person of Japanese origin to reach space. He perished on January 28, 1986 in the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger, on which he was serving as Mission Specialist for mission STS-51-L. Onizuka was born and raised in Kealakekua, Hawai'i and attended Konawaena High School until his graduation in 1964. Come celebrate our local hero.
