Free Displays & Activities Showcase the Magic of Science
KONA, HAWAI`I (October 15, 2022) – Keiki and their families are invited to explore the universe at Kona’s annual AstroDay celebration,
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5th, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Kona Commons Shopping Center in Kailua-Kona.
Organized by the Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC), this free, open-air event is an entertaining and interactive opportunity for the community to learn about the science of astronomy and the incredible discoveries being made by the telescopes in Hawai`i.
The Maunakea Observatories and other science-based and community organizations will offer colorful and informative science exhibitions, demonstrations, and activities. Free science kits will be available to take home while supplies last and the UH Institute for Astronomy will have a solar telescope on site to project views of the sun.
Participating in this year’s event are:
Island observatories: UH Institute for Astronomy (Oahu, Hawaii Island, Maui), Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Gemini Observatory, TMT International Observatory, W.M. Keck Observatory, and Subaru Telescope. The Las Cumbres Observatory and Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, both from Maui, will also participate.
Science Organizations: Hawai`i Community College’s Natural Sciences Dept. (Pālamanui Campus), The Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes, Hawaii Keiki Museum, Hawaii Science & Technology Museum, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center, Hawaii Electric Light, Int. Lunar Observatory Assn., National Weather service (NOAA) Mauna Loa, NASA Solar System Ambassadors and Project PANOPTES.

AstroDay is a science and astronomy event sponsored by the Maunakea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC). MKAOC is a partnership of scientists, administrators, and educators in astronomy throughout the state of Hawaiʻi. The mission of MKAOC is to coordinate and organize the collective outreach efforts of the astronomy community and act as a forum for the astronomy community and related organizations to plan and coordinate outreach activities.
