Kokua Roofing is the proud recipient of the Roofing Contractor’s Association of Hawaii 2017 Top Roofing Job in the steep slope residential category. This is an annual, statewide award given out to members of the roofing industry by their peers which is meant to showcase exceptional work. We are honored to be members of RCAH and to have received this award.
On the leeward side of the Big Island, Kukio Resort is considered to be one of the most luxurious, secure and private communities on the island. Home to some of the island’s wealthy and famous residents, the community is full of stunning custom homes along one of our most beautiful coastlines.
Kokua Roofing was selected by Trend Builders to install the roof on Lot 97, a 16,000 square foot oceanfront home and detached pool house of new construction with an extremely unusual radiused design. Trend Builders specializes in building custom luxury houses throughout the islands and produces many spectacular homes.
The homeowner requested a copper shingled roof, which was imported from Spokane, WA by Zappone Manufacturing, who specialize in Copper and Aluminum roofing materials. Virtually no section of the roof consists of straight lines, making roofing this home as much of a work of art as a construction project.
In total, our crew spent approximately 2500 hours on the roof installation. Due to the unusual design, the majority of the 20,000 shingles for this project are hand fabricated. No nail guns were used, each of the shingles, as well as 40,000 fasteners, were nailed in by hand to ensure smooth lines and an aesthetically pleasing finish that accentuates the beauty of the copper shingles.
The home owner took an active role during the build and made substantial design changes during construction, requiring the work crews to be flexible and adapt to the changes. Several sections have been deconstructed and reconstructed based upon the owner’s requests, including several skylights. Our crew foreman, Guadalupe Lopez, worked closely with the Trend Builders foreman, Rafael Ramirez to ensure the changes were made to the homeowner’s specifications.
