Kailua Kona, HI— Avid golfers from around the country are flying in for Hospice of Kona’s Memorial Golf Tournament, a fundraiser for Nakamaru Hale, Hospice of Kona’s residential hospice home. Sponsored by Anderson Wealth Planning, the tournament will be held 10am - 6pm on Monday, December 4 at the gorgeous Hokuli’a Golf Club in Kealakekua. Participants will enjoy a complimentary tournament shirt, continental breakfast, lunch, an awards banquet, prizes and a silent auction.  Golfers are also eligible to compete for one of eight spots in the Million Dollar Hole-in-One Shootout. County of Hawai'i: Free Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection (Sat. 9 Dec, 2017 7:30 am - 2:30 pm)

Free Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Event Information: A Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event will occur between 7:30a.m. and 2:30p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Kailua-Kona (Kealakehe) Recycling and Transfer Station.

Thes eevents are for household-generated and self-hauled waste only. Business, government agency, non-profit agency or farm wastes are not allowed. NO electronic waste and no tires will be accepted. The County of Hawai‘i Department of Environmental Management holds these regular collection events so that households can conveniently dispose of acceptable household hazardous waste in a manner that protects both public health and the environment. Acceptable household hazardous waste includes automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent lights and pesticides. Latex paint will be accepted at the Hilo and Kona events for reuse.

Don't forget to bring your new unwrapped toy to this special event. All toys generated from this event will be donated to Hawaii Family Support Services. Also, this will be the last time you are able to place your bid on our Silent Auction, Bid for Hawai'i. We look forward to seeing you there for some great networking.

All members are asked to please call the Chamber office directly, or register through the link below to RSVP for this event.

Please park in the Home Depot parking lot, where a shuttle will be provided to transport you to the event. Some street parking is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Parking is not permitted on the property.

In lieu of the customary event admission fee, attendees are encouraged to bring a new, un-wrapped toy to donate to Hawaii Family Support Services. A free RSVP is mandatory so that the event hosts may estimate an attendee count.

The Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs (DCCA) will host a “Business Action Center Day”, Thursday, December 14th, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the County of Hawaii West Hawaii Civic Center, Department of Research & Development located on the second floor of Building C just above the DMV. Walk-ins and appointments are welcome. For an appointment, call 808-323-4700. Research & Development staff are available for primary business consultations, and the DCCA will be available to assist with Hawaii State business registrations, General Excise Tax applications, Federal Employer Identification Numbers (FEIN) and other business filings. You may also find information on other government requirements pertaining to your industry/business, and other resources available to small businesses.

"Feel, See and Color the Universe" this Friday at 'Imiloa Astronomy Center

 

Scientists have teamed up with artists to create astonishingly detailed visuals to help us better understand complex astronomical discoveries-presenting science as stunning works of art that allow us to view astronomy through a different perspective.  
 
Learn more about the fascinating connections between art and science at 'Imiloa's Maunakea Skies talk this Friday, December 15 at 7:00 p.m.with Dr. Gordon K. Squires, TMT's Lead of Communications, Education and Public Outreach.
 
Dr. Squires will lead the audience through fascinating examples of how his team creates visualizations to illustrate revolutionary, scientific discoveries.
 
Hosted by Planetarium Technician Emily Peavy, 'Imiloa's monthly Maunakea Skies program includes observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawai'i, with the audience able to view prominent constellations and stars visible during this time of year. Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Friday of each month.  
 
General admission tickets are $10, $8 for 'Imiloa members (member level discounts apply). Pre-purchase tickets at 'Imiloa's front desk or by phone at 808-932-8901.

Wailea Village Historic Preservation Community: 20th Annual Mochi Pounding (Sat. 30 Dec, 2017 8:00 am - 2:00 pm)

Come pound Mochi, Saturday, Dec. 30th, in quaint Wailea Village in Hakalau area.

This is the 20th year of making good luck Japanese rice cakes the traditional way. The Event runs 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. with Miyo’s classic chicken and vegetarian hekka $5 plate lunch, Hawaiian, R&B & Jazz entertainment, new years’ craft vendors, blessings & prayers for the New Year, massage, fortune telling, I Ching readings, kadomatsu and displays from the Hawaii Plantation Museum. 

Wailea is at the 15 mile marker, on Hwy 19. Hamakua.

Look for the RED mochi signs. Park at the Hakalau Veterans Park and “walk back in time” to Wailea Village.

County Seeking Applicants for Boards and Commissions

The County of Hawai’i is seeking applicants to fill vacancies in various Boards and Commissions, notably the Salary Commission, the Liquor Commission, Environmental Management Commission and Windward Planning Commission.

Members of Boards and Commissions serve for staggered terms of five years, on a voluntary basis. Travel expenses to and from meetings are reimbursed.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, residents of the State of Hawai’i, and may not hold any other public office. 

The Mayor’s Office will fill the vacancies on Boards and Commissions from a list of applicants. Application forms are available online at www.hawaiicounty.gov/office-of-the-mayor

Historic Kailua Village: Hawaiian Sunset Saturday (Sat. 30 Dec, 2017 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm)

Everyone's invited to Hawaiian Sunset Saturday, happening this Saturday, December 30 starting at 5:30 pm on the lawn at Coconut Grove Marketplace.

 
Celebrate Kona's spectacular sunsets with live Hawaiian music and beautiful hula performed by the dancers of Halau Ka'eaikahelelani, under the direction of kumu hula Yuki Ka'ea Lyons and Lily Kahelelani Lyons Dudoit. 
 
Everyone's invited to bring lawn chairs or beach mats and enjoy the evening as the sun begins its journey over the horizon. As Hawaiian SunsetSaturdaycomes to a close, attendees can extend the evening at one of many nearby restaurants.
 
Parking is available; coolers are not permitted.
