Waimea Community Association Town Meeting March 2 (Thu. 2 Mar, 2017 5:15 pm - 7:30 pm)

Please note that there's a Waimea Community Association Town Meeting this Thurs., March 2, 2017 that will include an important update on the 2017 Legislature by Sen. Lorraine Inouye and Rep. Cindy Evans, and a County Council report by Councilman Tim Richards.

And thereʻs more:

  • There will be a brief discussion about federally subsidized Essential Air Service (EAS) bidding by at least two airlines – Mokulele Air and Makani Kai Air – and attendees will be asked to express preferences in terms of numbers of flights a week, flight destinations (ie., Kamuela-Maui, Kamuela-Honolulu, etc.) and cost.  EAS bid proposals must be submitted by March 23.
  • Community members are invited to come early for a sneak peek at the still-under-construction $16 million Waimea Middle School STEAM building that was funded by the State Legislature in 2013 and 2014 to raise the academic bar on 21st century teaching and learning for Waimea 6th-8th grade students.  The 24,000-square foot, two-story, 9-classroom building is expected to be completed by summer and ready to accept students come early August 2017.  Much of the buildingʻs exterior work is completed; most of the focus now is on interior finishing.

Everyone interested in touring the new STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts/’Aina-Math) building is asked to meet near the construction site on the south side of the campus at 4:30 p.m.  Closed comfortable shoes are recommended.  Participants may either park near the STEAM building or park in the school cafeteria parking lot and walk back to the building.  Entry to campus this time of day is from Mamalahoa Highway across from Carter Professional Center.

Please join us - as chilly as it's been, a jacket or wrap are suggested and there'll be steam hot Starbucks decaf coffee and cookies in the Cafeteria after the tour before the start of the town meeting.

Hawaii on the Hill: Registration Open Until March 3 (All day)

Aloha Hawaii on the Hill Supporters – Dates for the 2017 Hawaii on the Hill are confirmed for June 13-14, 2017. We are going a week later this year, due to a city-wide convention the previous week. As a past participant and supporter of HOH, we wanted to provide you with the opportunity to reserve your spot before opening up registration to all members. The Taste of Hawaii event is limited to 25 display tables, which were reserved very quickly last year, but participation in the Hawaii on the Hill agenda is open to all who would like to participate.

Attached is the registration form, which can be filled in electronically and sent back to me. From includes online links to register by level, pay by credit card and to make hotel reservations. Registration and payment should be received by March 3 to reserve your spot, particularly for the Taste event.

We have two preferred venues already secured:

The Grand Hyatt as our host hotel, with a group rate of $279+tax. The hotel has changed its shipping vendor, but we were able to secure a 50% discount on their standard shipping handling fees, which will charged to your room, for those staying at the Hyatt, or billed separately, if not.

Kennedy Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Building for Taste of Hawaii.

We are currently working with Senator Hirono’s office on the agenda, primarily featuring a Welcome Reception, Policy Summit and Taste of Hawaii Like last year, we’ll have new venues and elements, which we’ll announce as soon as they’re finalized. To help us with agenda development, we wanted to get your feedback:

Policy Summit

  • Are there any representatives, trade or other groups, in particular, you would like to hear from?
  • Would you prefer a two-hour group Summit in one room or half-hour as a group and 1.20 in breakouts by areas of interest?

Tour Options

  • Are there any tours that you would like to see added, if possible?

For those of you who would be interested in attending the annual Kamehameha Statue lei draping ceremony on Capitol Hill, it is taking place on Sunday, June 11.

We are looking forward to another successful event and to statewide representation. Please let me know if you have any questions. Let’s continue to make Hawaii on the Hill a business-builder for participants and our contingent a much-looked forward to presence on the Hill!
